The majestic dragon who is a guardian as well as a friend, Penumbra, sits atop a magical stone of Druzy Chalcedony in this striking fantasy jewelry pendant; the character of the pose, facial expression and stone all work together to make this a truly wonderful piece of dragon jewelry. The dragon’s name, Penumbra, means Shadow on the moon and this reflected in the type of stone that has been used to accent the piece. Druzy refers to the tiny crystals that cover the face of the stone; unfortunately photography doesn’t capture the beautiful sparkle, especially when viewed in sunlight. The Druzy crystals cover the surface of the Chalcedony stone; together they can provide energies to provide healing and strength, uplift spirits, give protection as well as others.

I started by creating a detailed pencil drawing to refine my idea and layout the design of the piece of fantasy jewelry. I then begin to sculpt everything in wax, first by addressing the overall composition, then proportion and musculature of the individual, lastly overlaying all of it with detailing. This was a very time and labor intensive process; including facial expression and applying the scales of the dragon one at a time. When sculpting was complete it was cast using the lost wax method in sterling silver. A patina was applied in two parts to give some areas a darker finish than others, providing for contrast and interest. This was followed by hand polishing and an application of Renaissance Wax to protect the finish and guard against tarnish.

This necklace features an unusual side clasp which allows one to thread a pendant over a short distance and be able to fasten it without fumbling around behind the neck.

Sculpted three dimensionally the cord threads between the dragons wings, which acts as the bail for the dragon pendant; with the height being 2 ¼ inches and the width 1 ¼ (measured at the outermost points).
